The ACRL Health Science Interest Group’s next Friday Forum is scheduled online for Friday, May 9, from 12:00 to 1:30 PM CDT. The topic is “Bringing Health Literacy to Dental Students: Making It Relevant and Interesting”. You do not have to be a member of ACRL to join us!
Health literacy is an important aspect of patient care that many dental students are not familiar with when entering the clinic. Yet it is a basic component of communication and the development of an optimal relationship between a patient and the dentist. This forum, using principles of adult learning, will provide attendees with ideas about how to present both the overarching concepts of health literacy, specific aspects of oral health literacy, and practical techniques to implement when interacting with patients.
Learning Objectives
-Attendees will learn the difference between pedagogy and andragogy and how those differences can influence teaching and learning in health science.
-Attendees will learn ways to present the underlying concepts of literacy and health literacy to health sciences students using the principles of andragogy.
-Attendees will learn ways to engage students with practical strategies which can be employed with patients in a clinical setting.
The presenter is Julie Schiavo, who serves as Assistant Director, Dental Services & Associate Librarian, at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans
