The Georgia Library Association Carterette Webinar Series, in collaboration with GLA’s Technical Services Interest Group, presents “Suffering Is Optional, but Not Required: Promotion and Tenure in Technical Services”. The webinar will take place on Wednesday, December 8, at 1:00 PM CDT. More information is below.

Description:

For technical services librarians starting out or transitioning to an academic library, promotion and tenure (P&T) can appear daunting, if not insurmountable. Every institution has different expectations, guidelines are often opaque, and advice can be hard to come by! P&T can feel especially daunting for technical services librarians with limited or no public service responsibilities. Jeff and Jessie will share their experiences navigating this process at institutions with uniquely different requirements. They will share strategies for how to get started as a new technical services librarian, including how to build your teaching, scholarship, and service portfolio for promotion and tenure.

About the Presenters:

Jessie Copeland is Director of Resource Services at Emory University.  Emory Libraries are under the provost’s office and librarians are considered faculty-equivalent.  The librarians are governed by the Handbook Governing the Librarian Series for Faculty-Equivalent Librarians and are granted renewal and promotion. Jessie is an Associate Librarian.

Jeff Mortimore is Interim Head of Collection Services and Discovery Services Librarian at Georgia Southern University. The Libraries at Georgia Southern are organized as a college under Academic Affairs and tenure-track librarians may be granted tenure. Jeff earned tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2020.

Can’t make it to the live show? That’s okay. The session will be recorded and available on the Carterette Series Webinars site for later viewing.
