Call for Proposals

The organizers of the 6th biennial Kathleen A. Zar Symposium, High Impact Collaboration: Libraries and Undergraduate Research Partnerships, to be held Friday, September 6, invite proposals for presentations that provide insight into projects and initiatives, whether established or newly created, in which libraries collaborate with faculty and administrators to grow their undergraduate research programs and improve students’ experiences.

The organizers are interested in presentations that provide examples of collaborative efforts between institutions, groups, or individuals, with a focus on opportunities for libraries and information professionals to contribute to or play an active role in projects or initiatives.

Proposals should be submitted via this Google form: http://bit.ly/zar2019. Proposals must include a title, author(s), and abstract (maximum 600 words).  Presentations will be 30-45 minutes. The deadline for submission is Friday, July 19. Proposals selected for full oral presentations will be eligible for travel support up to $300 and free registration to the symposium.

Please consider the following questions when preparing proposals:

* How have you collaborated with other campus units?

* If you led an undergraduate research initiative, how and why was it initiated, and what were the results?

* What are the opportunities and challenges in establishing a collaborative undergraduate research program?

* How has your undergraduate research program been assessed to demonstrate impact?

The intended audience of the symposium includes all who are involved or interested in collaborative undergraduate research programs at academic institutions.

About the Symposium

Undergraduate research is a growing focus of higher education, as colleges and universities seek ways to involve students in experimental learning outside the classroom. Research experiences allow students to participate in knowledge creation, develop disciplinary skills, make impactful connections with faculty, and contribute to scholarly conversations. Substantive research opportunities have a lasting impact beyond graduation, inspiring careers and lifelong learning. As campuses identify new ways to support student research, what role can academic libraries play in these efforts? This symposium will explore different ways that librarians, faculty, and administrators can collaborate to help undergraduates engage and succeed in meaningful research experiences during their college years.
