You are invited to examine the state of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on academic librarianship at the 2025 Zar Symposium. It will take place on Friday, October 3, from 8:30 AM to 2:35 PM. The location is Room 122 in the University of Chicago’s Joseph Regenstein Library.
Since the debut of ChatGPT in 2022, AI has increasingly been adopted by stakeholders in higher education. With the emergence of AI-generated and translated scholarly books, academic libraries need to understand the editorial and production processes and carefully consider the implications of acquiring and circulating these publications. Meanwhile, AI’s significant energy consumption and environmental impact raise ethical concerns. As AI tools are deployed to boost efficiency and streamline operations, the academic library landscape is faced with both opportunity and uncertainty. The Zar Symposium will address these topics, weigh the benefits and challenges, and foster critical discussion about these key issues. More details are available here.
Thanks to the generous support by the Kathleen and Howard Zar Science Library Fund and the Crerar Foundation, the Zar Symposium is free and open to the public. Register here.
Persons with disabilities who need an accommodation in order to participate in this event should contact Adrian Ho at University of Chicago Library, at adrianho@uchicago.edu, as soon as possible. Questions about the Symposium can also be sent to Adrian Ho.
