Legislative Update, 12/14/2018

Posted on December 14, 2018 by Carmen Howard

Federal news

While a government shutdown looms, Medicaid legislation (H.R. 7217, IMPROVE Act) passed in the House and has moved to the Senate. Bills passing both House and Senate include S. 2465, Sickle Cell Disease and Other Heritable Blood Disorders Research, Surveillance, Prevention, and Treatment Act and S. 3029 PREEMIE Reauthorization Act of 2018 (to prevent preterm births). More on this from Politico.com.

The latest Kaiser Health News podcast addresses changes implemented to the ACA via executive action and to Medicaid in lame-duck sessions in Wisconsin and Michigan.

In other federal health science news, NIH scientists have been temporarily restricted from using human fetal tissue in experiments as HHS conducts a review of this type of work (News from Science). Research into HIV, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer are affected.
