The Illinois Association of College & Research Libraries (IACRL) will hold a virtual Fall/Winter Social, themed “Celebrating Our Successes”. It will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, December 8, from 2:00 to 2:45 PM CDTAll Illinois academic and research librarians are welcome to attend, regardless of whether they are members of IACRL.

Take a short break from your day to share your professional successes from 2021 with your fellow IACRL members and other Illinois academic and research librarians! In our first-ever Zoom social, come ready to share your positive news and great things that happened this year-this could be a recent publication, a successful instruction endeavor, a welcome improvement to library services-whatever you did well. In addition to learning about other librarians’ endeavors, this is a great opportunity to network with other library professionals from around the state. Besides, what’s one more Zoom meeting?

Grab a hot beverage and be prepared to cheer your fellow librarians on their successes. You are welcome to use a festive or silly Zoom background.

Registration is not required. Feel free to drop by. Lorene Kennard will post the Zoom info. the morning of the event.

The IACRL Conference & Continuing Education Committee is pleased to announce its next Spark event! Join us for Spark: Open Pathways – Exploring the Intersections of Diversity Equity and Inclusion and Open Educational Resources. It will take place on Thursday, December 9, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM CDT. The event will be held via Zoom. Library workers from all libraries in Illinois are welcome to attend! Registration is now open here.

Call for Proposals

The Committee is currently seeking proposals in the theme of diversity, equity, and inclusion in OER and Open Pedagogy. Topics to consider include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Culturally responsive instruction and “Open”
  • Elements of traditional textbook publishing or pedagogy that exclude
  • How “open” can clear barriers to DEI
  • OER is not fundamentally diverse or inclusive
  • OER and Belonging

Proposals on other topics will also be considered as space allows.

Presenters will give 10-minute lightning talks on their topics. After a set of lightning talks, attendees will go into breakout rooms to network and discuss the lightning round topics, and will have the opportunity to ask questions of the presenter in their breakout room.

Participants will also be able to discuss their own experiences and ideas with one another.

If you are interested in presenting, please submit a proposal here by Friday, October 29. The schedule will be finalized no later than November 12, 2021.

Registration is still open for this Friday’s IACRL event, “Spark: Looking Back, Looking Forward”. It will take place online from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM.

The event will have three lightning talks from Illinois academic librarians on practices they developed during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and participants will be able to discuss the presentation of their choice with the presenter in a breakout room. This will be followed by a hour-long unconference with topics suggested by the attendees. Submit unconference topics in advance here.

Call for Volunteers: IACRL Committees (Terms Begin in July)

Are you looking for more ways to get involved with professional development? Do you want to meet more of your peers in academic libraries across Illinois? Would you like to give back to the Illinois academic library community? Join an IACRL Committee!

IACRL (Illinois Association of College & Research Libraries) is seeking members for all committees for up to three-year terms beginning in July, 2021. Please fill out this form if you are interested.

IACRL’s standing committees are as follows.

Awards Committee
The committee shall be responsible for the award of Illinois Academic Librarian of the Year and for any other awards the association deems appropriate. The committee shall submit award decisions to the Executive Committee.

Conference and Continuing Education Committee
The committee shall provide workshops, conferences, symposium, classes and other educational experiences for members.

Communications Committee
The committee shall publish a newsletter at least twice a year (during the Fall and Spring). The general and managing editors shall be elected by the committee. The committee shall be responsible for the maintenance of the IACRL web site.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
The committee is charged with collaboration and promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in academic libraries. The committee shall work with the IACRL Executive Board to initiate, advise and mobilize support for appropriate DEI activities in academic librarianship.

Membership Committee
The committee shall actively recruit and promote membership engagement and retention in IACRL. The committee shall work with the Vice-President/President-Elect to identify volunteers to serve on committees.
