Call for Abstracts–Even the Bonds are Bigger: The Changing Role of Librarians (American Chemical Society Meeting, April 5-16)–Deadline Tues., Jan. 19

Posted on January 9, 2021 by Eric Edwards

(via Teri Vogel–University of California, San Diego)

This is the first call for abstracts for Even the Bonds are Bigger: The Changing Role of Librarians, a CINF symposium for the American Chemical Society National Meeting (Monday, April 5 – Friday, April 16, 2021). We welcome talks from STEM librarians on ways they have adapted their roles or adopted new ones in the last few years (including this year due to COVID-19) to connect, collaborate, and engage with researchers, instructors, and students.

Please submit your abstracts here by Tuesday, January 19. The symposium abstract is at the bottom of this announcement.

The spring meeting will be virtual, delivered as ~100 live, interactive 3-hour sessions (no pre-recordings) per day for 10 weekdays, followed by two weeks of on demand content at the presenters’ discretion. The registration fee has been adjusted to $99 for ACS members, $149 for non-members, and $29 for students. See the ACS FAQ page for more information.

Please contact Teri Vogel, at tmvogel@ucsd.edu, with any questions.

Symposium Title: Even the Bonds are Bigger: The Changing Role of Librarians

Symposium Abstract: In recent years, STEM librarians’ responsibilities have evolved or expanded into new areas, often as we continued to cover our (also evolving) work in collection development, instruction, and outreach. Declining library budgets, new technologies, and the changing needs of researchers and students are among the drivers of these changes. And this last year has become a new catalyst, with campuses closed and so many working, learning, and studying remotely. 2020 may have accelerated some of those changes, or even inspired us to find opportunities to connect and engage with our researchers and students.

In this symposium, librarians will share how they have adapted existing roles and/or adopted new ones over the last few years. Topics can cover data management, scholarly communication, outreach, instruction and collection development, and more.
