The editors, Erin L. Ellis and Jill K. Becker, seek chapter proposals for Engagement in Action: Academic Libraries Advancing Institutional Goals. This edited volume will include chapters that describe academic librarian engagement as defined in the 2025 College & Research Libraries article “Defining Engagement for Academic Librarians”:
“A strategic, formal exchange between committed parties that creates reciprocal, collaborative relationships and yields mutual benefits while advancing university, library, and department goals.”
We invite proposals from authors who can describe areas of academic librarianship that meet this definition of engagement, how their engagement work is articulated, executed, and supported, and how it is assessed. The goal of this volume is to feature practical examples and applications that will aid in assessing and communicating the value of engagement work and demonstrate how a clear definition of engagement can be applied and assessed in real contexts.

Proposal Guidelines
We invite proposals from anyone working in academic libraries regardless of classification, rank, position, or status.
Proposals should be submitted via this form and include:
- A working title
- A maximum 500-word abstract that describes your chapter and how it exemplifies the definition of engagement
- The possible section(s) that the chapter fits into or you may propose a section that isn’t listed.
- Author bios for each chapter contributor (maximum 200 words per bio).
Expected Timeline
Deadline for proposals: Friday May 8, 2026
Responses to proposals will be sent no later than July 31, 2026
First drafts of proposals due: Dec. 1, 2026
Revised, final chapters due: April 2027
Final chapters should be 3,000 to 5,000 words long.
