Registration is open for the ACRL EBSS (Education and Behavioral Sciences Section) Communication Studies Committee’s May Practical Sharing webinar. It will take place on Tuesday, May 20, at 1:00 PM CDT and will focus on health communication and special collections. The webinar will feature Heidi Uhey and Beth Farwell from Baylor University sharing their ongoing collaboration exploring interdisciplinary instruction, focusing on critical inquiry and student-led investigation of health-related special collections. Using rare books and active learning assignments, the pair work closely with several departments including Communications/Health, Medical Humanities, and organize public events highlighting the use of artist books in communicating health and illness narratives.

Heidi Uhey is the Health Sciences Librarian in the Department of Research and Engagement at Baylor University Libraries. She holds a Master’s in Library Science and a Master’s in Folklore from the University of Indiana, and a Bachelor’s in Creative Writing from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. In the fall of 2024, she worked with health humanities scholar Darian Goldin Stahl to host a multi-day workshop series related to health communication and artist books. She is an early career librarian and is currently finishing her first year as an academic library professional. In addition to the Medical Humanities Department in Baylor’s College of Arts and Sciences, she is liaison to allied health disciplines in the Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences and is a passionate advocate for the representation of vernacular knowledge within health research and instruction.

Beth Farwell is the Director of Arts and Special Collections Research Center at Baylor University Libraries. She holds a Master’s in Library and Information Science and Master’s in Music from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Bachelor’s in Music from the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music. Beth was part of a team awarded the Library Instruction Round Table National Innovation in Instruction Award in 2022, served on the Amigos Board of Directors, and received the Outstanding Faculty Partner Award from Baylor University. She has extensive experience in library leadership, special collections, preservation, and instruction, and has been actively involved in professional organizations such as the American Library Association and the Music Library Association.

Please register here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

If you have any questions or are interested in presenting news-we-can-use in a future session, please reach out to Kristin Peace, Communications Studies Committee Chair.
