During World War II, Northwestern physicians banded with Chicago area nurses, enlisted men, and Red Cross civilians to form the 12th General Hospital Unit, treating 29, 799 patients in the North African and Mediterranean theaters. Using the papers of Michael L. Mason and James A. Conner, who served in the Unit, Northwestern’s Galter Health Sciences Library & Learning Center has created a digital exhibit to preserve and promote the legacy of 12th General Hospital personnel.
To celebrate the digital exhibit and its source materials, the Library is hosting a lunch-time event on August 14, 2019, 12:00-1:30 PM in Baldwin Auditorium on Northwestern University’s Chicago campus. Please join us for a presentation about surgery and recovery during World War II from Dr. W. Marble Sanders, senior historian for the US Army Office of the History of Medicine. After Dr. Marble’s talk, there will be time to enjoy an on-site banner exhibit about the 12th General Hospital and a tribute to honor living veterans.
As this programming will offer a fascinating insight into military medicine and Northwestern’s contributions during World War II, we thought that you and others from your institution might be interested in this free event.
