Challenging Deficit Thinking in Academic Libraries: Ideas and Applications

A virtual panel discussion convened by Eamon Tewell of Columbia University with panelists Yi Ding of California State University, Northridge; Chelsea Heinbach and Rosan Mitola of University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and Amy Pajewski of West Chester University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, June 11 at 2pm Eastern/11am Pacific.

What is deficit thinking, and how is it present in libraries and education? The idea that people fail because of personal attributes is pervasive and damaging. In education, deficit models focus on a learner’s weaknesses, ignoring the systemic issues around them. Participants in this discussion will find out what deficit models look like in information literacy and library instruction and learn about teaching strategies that aim to oppose systemic inequalities rather than have students simply adapt to them.

This webinar is free and open to all. A recording will be made available after the session.
