This fall, in conjunction with the My Library Is campaign, RAILS and IACRL will co-host an online event to help academic libraries promote and articulate their value. This event will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 10:00 – 11:30 AM. To help with this event, academic librarians are invited to submit ideas for short presentations (10 min) regarding marketing and/or promotion efforts. These topics may include (but are not limited to):

  • Making administrators/deans aware of the library’s value
  • Demonstrating the library’s impact on student success
  • Articulating the ways in which the library advances the missions/goals of your institution
  • Ensuring that libraries are brought to the table when big institutional decisions are being made
  • Making the faculty and other university/college staff aware of what the library can do for them
  • Making students aware of what the library can do for them

If you would like to be considered to present, please email Dan Bostrom, RAILS Member Engagement Manager, dan.bostrom@railslibraries.info with your idea by Friday, September 13.

During our strategic planning listening tours, you told us that you’d like ideas on how to gather meaningful testimonials showing how people benefit from using your library. You can start by encouraging patrons and others to share their positive experiences on your website.

RAILS has developed an easy way for all our members to do this by adding our “Tell Your Library Story” submission form link to the library website. Bonus: your library’s name will already be filled in! After patrons have started to post testimonials, you’ll be able to display them on your library’s website by retrieving them as a feed.

For HTML code, the method for inserting the feed content, and more specifics, visit the MyLibraryIs… blog article on this topic.

Individuals and libraries should update their L2 profiles before the new L2 (Library Directory and Learning Calendar) is launched next year. This will also ensure that other members will be able to find the most up-to-date information about your library. Library directors and other library employees with elevated edit permissions in L2 can update most of the library’s info (address, phone number, etc.) for the library.

Individuals are also encouraged to create or update their own accounts to be able to register for continuing education events and so other members will be able to contact you for networking purposes. To create an account, go to librarylearning.info. Click the “Sign In” link at the top, then follow the prompts on the screen. Or if you already have an account, but need to update it, log into L2 with your email and password. Click on your name in the upper right corner.

For help making any of these changes, contact L2Help@railslibraries.info.

RAILS will offer two online roundtables to help libraries learn more about Census 2020. Come to share and learn tips, suggestions, and approaches from your colleagues!

These forums are held via Zoom and any library staff members from any Illinois library are invited to attend. The forum will feature a brief presentation by one or more presenters followed by a text discussion. Both forums will be archived for later viewing.

Based on feedback from our member libraries of all sizes and types (academic, public, school, and special), RAILS has launched a campaign to help libraries prove their value to their different stakeholders. The latest addition to the campaign is the MyLibraryIs.org website.

Members told us they wanted a place to share effective ways they have found to tell their stories and to learn from others. A key feature of the site is the Sharing Showcase, where libraries can post stories, talking points, marketing plans, videos, press releases, social media posts, and more. Please share what you have done at your library to help prove your value. Check out the showcase to see what libraries have already shared!

The site also includes a Get Started section, with general resources and toolkits, library value calculators, information on networking opportunities, and specific information for each type of library. There is also a blog where RAILS and members will share helpful information and a training section that includes networking opportunities, webinars, and workshops.

Visit MyLibraryIs.org today and let us know what you think! (You can contact Mary Witt, RAILS Communications Director, with all feedback.) And be sure to check back often, as RAILS (and hopefully our members!) will be adding new content on a regular basis.
