As previously announced, RAILS received a grant to replace L2 (, the statewide continuing education calendar and library directory. As part of this process, we are looking at current L2 features and functions to see how they might be improved.

We are asking interlibrary loan staff to complete a brief survey on L2’s Resource Sharing Policy Directory. Please take a minute to give us your feedback, and feel free to share the survey with other interlibrary loan staff at your library. Please complete the survey by Friday, July 12. Thanks in advance for your input!

RAILS Announces Board Election Results

(via Gwen Gregory, University of Illinois at Chicago)

Thanks to all who voted in the May 2019 RAILS Board Election. A special welcome to our colleague Sarah McHone-Chase of Northern Illinois University! I look forward to working with all the board members as the academic library representative on the board. Please contact me if you have ideas or suggestions for RAILS.

Successful candidates are:

At-Large Seats

·        Scott Pointon, White Oak Library District

·        Selina GomezBeloz, Waukegan Public Library

·        Sarah McHone-Chase, Northern Illinois University

(Note: Originally, two at-large seats were available. RAILS Board member Liza Campbell resigned her at-large seat effective June 1, 2019. The RAILS Nominating Committee voted to have Sarah McHone-Chase fill the remainder of Liza’s term, since Sarah was the third highest vote getter in this category.)

Public Library Trustee Seats

·        Dianne Hollister, Bloomington Public Library

·        Susan Busenbark, Kewanee Public Library

Special Library Seat

·        Halle Cox, Kane County Law Library & Self Help Legal Center

New board members will be seated in July. Thanks to all candidates who ran in the election. We appreciate your interest in RAILS!

ACRL has just released the Spring issue of its Chapter Topics Newsletter, which is published twice annually and features activities and projects by ACRL state and regional chapters. The issue includes two articles on last fall’s RAILS/IACRL networking events. One piece, written by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Mackenzie Salisbury, covers the November 6 event at Northwestern University’s Evanston campus, while the other article, which Dan Bostrom of RAILS contributed, discusses the November 12 gathering at Prairie State College. To read both articles and view the accompanying photos and slides, please go here. The Illinois chapter is one of only four, nationally, to have articles appear in this issue.

Thank you very much to Mackenzie Salisbury and Dan Bostrom for their work in putting together the submissions.

(via RAILS)

Your last chance to vote in the RAILS Board election is this Friday, May 17, by 5 p.m. It’s quick and easy, so don’t miss this opportunity to let your voice be heard. RAILS libraries of all types (academic, public, school, and special) are urged to vote. Each library and school district (or other agency with multiple library locations) designates one person who will vote; generally, it is either the library director or the board president. Your library may vote on all seats, regardless of your library type.

You can review brief summaries for each candidate before completing the 2019 RAILS Board ballot. Because the RAILS Board helps shape the future of the system, your vote is very important. Please vote today!

RAILS has begun a campaign to help our member libraries of all sizes and types (academic, public, school, and special) tell their stories and articulate their value to stakeholders more effectively. This kind of assistance was requested by many libraries during the recent strategic planning process. Links to the videos and more information are available at

As a part of this campaign, the Chicago marketing firm Imagination has created a short video as a pro bono project for us. Dreams Take Flight at Your Local Library portrays children discovering the library and all it has to offer, and it features the library’s important role in STEM education. You may recognize the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin as the location where the action takes place.

The video is available in several lengths and in two languages, English and Spanish. You’re encouraged to post the videos to your library websites and social media accounts. Send yor comments to
