Instructor Bios:

Holly Hudson, MLIS,  is an Assistant Professor and Regional Health Sciences Librarian at the University of Illinois Chicago – Rockford. She is a liaison to the College of Medicine and has worked for UIC since August of 2022, also the same time she joined HSLI. Holly provides instruction and support for the COM community in Rockford and serves as the on-campus point person for systematic reviews and other evidence synthesis projects. She is on the editorial board for the Rockford Research Newsletter and serves on the UIC Library Teaching Support and Curriculum Committee (TSCC). Her research interests lie with uncovering the information needs and information-seeking behavior of various user groups, both within and outside of the library.

In her copious free time, Holly loves to read (shocking . . .) and travel. She has friends and family all over the U.S. and has usually just returned from a trip or is planning the next one. Holly is also a big foodie and would love any great restaurant recommendations the next time you see her.

Carmen Howard, MSLS, is a Regional Health Sciences Librarian & Senior Instructor at the Library of the Health Sciences and a Clinical Associate in the Department of Health Science Education & Pathology in the College of Medicine, located on the Peoria campus of the University of Illinois Chicago. Ms. Howard has over 10 years of experience teaching patient communication to medical students and engaging in health information outreach to the community. She believes in the importance of free and reliable health information for all.

Cynthia Reynolds, MLIS, is a Regional Health Sciences Librarian & Senior Instructor for the University of Illinois Chicago’s Library of the Health Sciences at the Rockford Campus. She is a liaison to the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy, including Medical Biotechnology. Ms. Reynolds provides curriculum-integrated instruction and research support to students and faculty. She has a Level II Specialization in Consumer Health Information from the Medical Library Association. Her professional interests include health literacy and health misinformation.

Tina Griffin, MLIS, is an Associate Professor and the Faculty liaison to the Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her previous experience in molecular biology included the entire research lifecycle from experimental design through data management to publication. Her research interests include data management education, informatics, and ethics. Her current work includes developing curriculum on data management, reference service on chemical and drug resources; offer consults on research data management process improvement on an individual and laboratory level, and providing evidence synthesis support. Working at a public research institution means she also works with individuals and other community organizations to help them learn how to access data and information to advance their health education and research goals.

Session Description:

Unreliable information is prevalent like never before, thanks to social media and national disinvestment in education and science. If unreliable information makes it into a medical setting, it can have life-altering or even deadly consequences, impacting vulnerable populations the most. As information professionals, librarians have the tools and information to help combat this rising crisis, so we must help health sciences professionals and students learn to use them as well. Join Holly Hudson, Carmen Howard, Cynthia Reynolds, and Tina Griffin as they help you understand the current state of information, how to teach about it, and principles to help you and your patrons identify unreliable information both inside and outside the exam room.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the current state of information
  • Create an adaptable lesson plan outline
  • Explore current information evaluation tools
  • Share communication strategies
