We are seeking contributions for a new book on\u00a0The\u00a0Social<\/span>\u00a0Future<\/span>\u00a0of Academic\u00a0Libraries<\/span>\u00a0<\/i><\/b>building on our panel session at ACRL 2017 viewing\u00a0libraries<\/span>\u00a0through the lens of\u00a0intellectual and\u00a0social<\/span>\u00a0capital<\/b>.<\/p>\n Our point of departure is the current focus in college and university\u00a0libraries<\/span>\u00a0on engagement, partnerships, community development, and\u00a0social<\/span>\u00a0relations. The\u00a0social<\/span>\u00a0turn in academic librarianship requires new ways of working and new ways of thinking about the resources, services, and capabilities of the library and information workforce. Intellectual capital perspectives and\u00a0social<\/span>\u00a0network theory can help librarians understand the demands of the current environment and develop effective responses for their communities.<\/p>\n The book is co-edited by Tim Schlak, Sheila Corrall, and Paul Bracke, and will be published by Facet Publishing. It will have three parts:<\/p>\n Part 1\u00a0<\/b>will introduce the relevant theoretical, conceptual, and methodological frameworks;<\/p>\n Part 2<\/b>\u00a0will explore the application of intellectual capital and\u00a0social<\/span>\u00a0network theory to\u00a0libraries<\/span>\u00a0as\u00a0social<\/span>\u00a0organizations, and show how they can use the models and tools presented to evaluate and strengthen strategy, collaborations, leadership, and other aspects of library performance;<\/p>\n Part 3<\/b>\u00a0will focus on implications for library policy and practice, professional education, and research.<\/p>\n Parts 1 and 3 will primarily be authored by the editors. The focus of our\u00a0call<\/span>\u00a0for proposals is on Part 2. We are particularly interested in receiving proposals for chapters that discuss and illustrate the practical application of intellectual and\u00a0social<\/span>\u00a0capital theory and concepts, including\u00a0social<\/span>\u00a0network analysis, to issues currently facing academic\u00a0libraries<\/span>\u00a0and librarians. The target length for contributed chapters is around 5,000 words (excluding references).<\/p>\n Potential areas of application include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 strategic planning\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 space design<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 scholarly communication<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 information behavior<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 learner support\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 library instruction\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 academic liaison<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 partnership formation<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 relationship management<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 community outreach<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 organization development<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 user experience<\/p>\n \u00b7\u00a0 service assessment.<\/p>\n We invite potential contributors to submit an abstract of 300-500 words, summarizing your proposed chapter, outlining your intended approach and structure, and indicating how it advances thinking and practice in the field. Please provide a working title for your contribution, up to six keywords highlighting the topics\/issues to be discussed, and brief author bio (2-3 sentences) along with details of any related prior work.<\/p>\n
