Here are the priorities this year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>House &amp; Senate: Reauthorize the Museum and Library Services Act (S. 2271)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>House &amp; Senate: Fully Fund LSTA and IAL for FY 2019<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>House &amp; Senate: Visit a library, see broadband access in action<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2) Members of Congress have shown support for libraries in recent actions. Two &#8220;Dear Appropriator&#8221; letters supporting federal library funding for FY19 were signed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.districtdispatch.org\/2018\/04\/record-number-of-signatures-in-the-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as many as or more<\/a> than the number of Senators who signed last year. Representatives on the Committee on House Administration have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.districtdispatch.org\/2018\/04\/house-committee-approves-fdlp-modernization-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved the Federal Depository Library Program Modernization Act of 2018<\/a>, which will increase the reach of the FDLP. Senators on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.districtdispatch.org\/2018\/04\/senate-foreign-relations-committee-hearing-on-the-marrakesh-treaty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support the Marrakesh Treaty<\/a>, which would make 350,000 accessible books available to people in the United States who have print disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>3) Protections afforded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.districtdispatch.org\/2018\/04\/ala-releases-faq-net-neutrality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">net neutrality are still mostly in place<\/a> while the FCC seeks approval from the Office of Management and Budget to proceed with their proposed decision. There&#8217;s still time to <a href=\"https:\/\/cqrcengage.com\/ala\/app\/write-a-letter?0&amp;engagementId=443593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ask your representative to support the Congressional Review Act to overturn the FCC&#8217;s ruling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>4) The Trump Administration may use the authority of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.districtdispatch.org\/2018\/04\/rescission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rescission<\/a> to require Congress to review their FY18 appropriations budget. If this occurs, funding for library and other programs may be at risk. As yet, Senate Republican leaders oppose this action.<\/p>\n<p>5) Chief of the U.S. EPA, Scott Pruitt, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2018\/04\/new-rule-could-force-epa-ignore-major-human-health-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposing a policy to limit research used by government scientists<\/a> when making new &#8220;significant&#8221; regulations to only using studies whose data are publicly available. An analysis of the proposal by the Union of Concerned Scientists suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/news\/press-release\/scientists-oppose-new-pruitt-restrictions#.Wud2y38h2Uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scientists had little input on the crafting of this legislation, and many oppose the action<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Illinois:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visit Legiscan to see a summary\/status for these Illinois Bills currently working their way through the State Legislature:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/IL\/bill\/HB5235\/2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HB5235<\/a>: Amends the Freedom of Information Act<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/IL\/bill\/SB2727\/2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB2727<\/a>: Amends the Illinois Local Library Act<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/IL\/bill\/SB2849\/2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB2849<\/a>: Creates the Prescription Drug Repository Program Act<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Federal: 1) Take action in National Library Legislative Day from home, if you&#8217;re not traveling to D.C. for the event next week.
