Washington&#8217;s story illuminates the broader context of the experience of illness and the practice ofmedicine, which during his time was transitioning from a traditional healer craft to a profession.<\/p>\n<p>COMPANION DISPLAY:<br \/>\nIn conjunction with the exhibit, the Galter Library has also put together a companion display, &#8220;The State of Medicine at the Start of the Nation.&#8221; The display highlights a selection of holdings from Special Collections to contextualize the western world at the time of George Washington, with an emphasis on medicine&#8217;s contemporary practices and developments.<\/p>\n<p>NOVEMBER 30:<br \/>\nMark your calendars! A reception for the exhibit will be held on November 30th, 2016 at 12 noon in Dollie&#8217;s Corner, Level 2 of the library, and will feature Dr. Kelly Wisecup, Assistant Professor, Department of English and Programs in American Studies and Science and Human Culture, Northwestern University. Dr. Wisecup will present on: Medicine at Home: Early American Botanical Colonization and Native American Herbal Resistance.<\/p>\n<p>EXHIBIT CREDITS:<br \/>\n&#8220;Every Necessary Care and Attention&#8221;: George Washington &amp; Medicine was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health and George Washington&#8217;s Mount Vernon Estate, Museum &amp; Gardens.
