The program recruits master of library and information science (MLIS) students from historically underrepresented ethnic and racial groups into careers in research libraries and archives.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits of the Kaleidoscope Program include the following.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a tuition stipend of up to $10,000 over two years in support of MLIS education<\/li>\n<li>leadership and career development training<\/li>\n<li>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arl.org\/research-library-visits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">site visit<\/a>\u00a0to an ARL member library<\/li>\n<li>financial support for skills development<\/li>\n<li>a formal mentorship program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Kaleidoscope Program is funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arl.org\/list-of-arl-members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ARL member libraries<\/a>. This program reflects the commitment of ARL members to create a diverse workforce that will better reflect the changing demographics of higher education and society and will advance the Association&#8217;s goals of creating more inclusive, equitable, and just organizations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Program Goal and Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Kaleidoscope Program seeks to accomplish the following goals.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>attract MLIS students from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups to careers in research libraries and archives<\/li>\n<li>strengthen participants&#8217; leadership and job-searching skills via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arl.org\/category\/our-priorities\/diversity-equity-inclusion\/arl-annual-leadership-symposium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ARL Annual Leadership Symposium<\/a><\/li>\n<li>develop a network of peers and mentors who will guide and nurture the career development of the participants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Applicant Criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Successful applicants will meet the following criteria.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>identify as being from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group, based on the categories outlined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/US\/PST045219\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Census Bureau<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p3Var.pl?Function=DEC&amp;Id=45152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statistics Canada<\/a>\u00a0or Aboriginal (First Nations, M\u00e9tis, and Inuit) people classifications<\/li>\n<li>be a resident of the US or Canada<\/li>\n<li>be accepted into an ALA-accredited MLIS program<\/li>\n<li>have a strong interest in pursuing a career in a research library or archive, especially one that is a member of the Association of Research Libraries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To Apply<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All applicants are required to submit the following materials <strong>by 11:59 PM CDT on Thursday, May 13<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/arl.formstack.com\/forms\/kaleidoscope_application_2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online application form<\/a><\/li>\n<li>r\u00e9sum\u00e9<\/li>\n<li>essay (400 words maximum) describing what attracts you to a career in a research library or archive<\/li>\n<li>unofficial undergraduate transcripts including last academic semester completed<\/li>\n<li>unofficial graduate transcripts including last academic semester completed OR official letter of acceptance into a graduate-level program in library and information science (either at the time of application or before being accepted into the Kaleidoscope Program)<\/li>\n<li>two letters of recommendation (See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arl.org\/call-for-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">application requirements<\/a>\u00a0for details.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information about the program and the application process, go <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/l3eb0c\/dd9mit\/xwtnql\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(via Gwen Gregory, Northern Illinois University, on behalf of the Association of Research Libraries) The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is accepting applications for the 2021-2023 cohort of the Kaleidoscope Program.
