Hello,

The August 1 proposal deadline is approaching for lightning talks, a new offering at the Health Science Librarians of Illinois (HSLI) conference. A designated timeslot on the afternoon of Thursday, September 27, has been set aside for sharing experiences, best practices, or how lemonade was made out of lemons! Each presenter will be allotted 5-10 minutes, depending on how many abstracts are submitted and accepted. There will be ample time left for Q&A and lively discussion.

Lightning talks sessions are guaranteed to spark creative ideas that we can all consider and adapt in our own libraries. Please consider sharing your expertise or story. To apply, please submit an abstract of no more than 200 words as an application to Frances Drone-Silvers (frances.drone-silvers@carle.com) now through August 1, 2018. Notification of acceptance will be sent by August 17 after review by the lightning talk subcommittee. Co-authored presentations are acceptable, though there should be no more than two presenting authors. The presenting author/s must register for and plan on attending the HSLI conference.

Attendees at the 2018 HSLI conference also have opportunities to present in the poster session (proposal deadline: August 17. See sep. announcement). Other deadlines: August 3: Conference scholarship application deadline; August 20: Conference student internship application deadline.

The HSLI 2018 Annual Conference will be held September 26-28 at the Cliffbreakers Riverside Hotel and Conference Center in Rockford, Illinois.  The Conference theme is “Rivers of Data, Streams of Knowledge”.  Conference registration will begin on August 1, 2018. The Health Science Librarians of Illinois (HSLI) Conference Planning Committee is now accepting applications for the 2018 Syed Maghrabi Conference Scholarship.  The scholarship, named in honor of dedicated HSLI member Syed Maghrabi (1945-2000), supports HSLI members’ participation in the organization’s Annual Conference. (This year’s gathering will take place from September 26 to 28 in Rockford, IL.) The Scholarship will provide reimbursement for a free 2018 HSLI Annual Conference registration and one night at the Conference hotel, the Cliffbreakers Riverside Hotel & Conference Center in Rockford.

To apply, one must be a current member of the Health Science Librarians of Illinois (2018 dues paid) and write a brief essay explaining why she or he is interested in receiving the Scholarship. Recipients are responsible for registering and making hotel arrangements on their own. After the Conference, each recipient will write an article for the HSLI Newsletter blog, explaining how she or he plans to apply the knowledge gained at the Conference to her or his professional responsibilities.

Applications are due Friday, August 3. Please fill out the application form and submit it to Miranda Shake, HSLI President, at mshake@lakeview.edu. Applicants will learn by Friday, August 17, whether or not they will receive a Scholarship. More information about previous Scholarship recipients and Syed Maghrabi himself can be found on the HSLI Awards page. Please check the Conference website for the latest updates and other information on the HSLI 2018 Annual Conference. The Health Science Librarians of Illinois Conference Planning Committee invites poster proposals for the HSLI 2018 Annual Conference, be held September 26-28 at the Cliffbreakers Riverside Hotel and Conference Center in Rockford, Illinois. The Conference theme is “Rivers of Data, Streams of Knowledge”. We encourage you to take a literal or figurative approach to our theme (use your productive imagination).

Ideas can include, but are not limited to, any area of librarianship, such as instruction, leadership, and program development, in addition to communication, collection development, outreach, and evaluation. Posters from last year covered a wide variety of topics, ranging from collaboration, technology programs, and data fluency, to disabilities, bookplates and even tattoos.

If you have presented a poster at another meeting this year (MLA), or plan to present one (Midwest Chapter/MLA), that you have not shown at a past HSLI Conference, please consider submitting it here, also. Let our members who can’t travel have the opportunity to see the work you’ve been doing!

The posters will be presented during Nancy’s Reception on the evening of Thursday, September 27, starting at 6:00 PM. Presenters may set up their posters starting at 5:00 PM.  Posters can remain up until the break after breakfast on Friday morning. The actual poster session will be from 6:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday evening, during which time the poster presenters need to be present to discuss their posters with Conference attendees.

Please submit a proposal abstract, no longer than 300 words, describing your poster.

  • Include your name, position title, address, phone number and e-mail address on all submissions.
  • Poster sizes – let us know which one you will be using (we need to know this for spacing considerations during our review – if not sure, give an estimate)
    • poster board 24″ x 36″
    • tri-fold poster 36″ x 48″ (for setup on a table)
    • wall posters – various sizes allowed (including 45″ x 45″)
  • E-mail your abstracts to Linda Feinberg (Lfeinberg@northshore.org).
  • The deadline for abstract submission is Friday, August 17
  • Notification of poster acceptance will be made Labor Day week, after review by the poster committee.
  • Posters must be made available to post electronically on the HSLI website after the meeting.
  • Each poster presenter must register for the HSLI conference (which includes each author attending)
  • NEW THIS YEAR! Each poster will receive a stipend to help offset printing costs.  One presenter per poster will receive a stipend, and an individual presenter can receive a maximum of only one stipend, even if submitting multiple posters.

Want another opportunity to present? Also new for HSLI 2018 are Lightning Talks, which are short presentations, 5-10 minutes in length, on various topics. Watch for the call for proposals.

For more information on the HSLI meeting, see the Conference website. Please refer to the “Posters” section for more information as it becomes available. If you have any questions, please contact Eric Edwards, Publicity Subcommittee Chair on the HSLI Conference Planning Committee, at eedwards@ilsos.net.

Rivers of Data, Streams of Knowledge” is the theme of the 2018 HSLI (Health Science Librarians of Illinois) Annual Conference that will take place September 26-28 in Rockford, IL at the newly renovated Cliffbreakers Riverside Hotel & Conference Center. Visit the website to see photos of the hotel, located above the scenic Rock River, and to read about the amenities the hotel offers (complimentary WiFi, a fitness center, and an indoor pool!).

First settled in 1834, a mere 16 years after Illinois became a state, (and 3 years after Chicago was incorporated), the city was originally called Midway, because it was midway between Chicago and Galena. It later became Rockford because of the Rock River’s rocky ford bubbling near the original settlement. Home to universities and hospitals where some of our HSLI members work, Rockford is a wonderful place to visit, with much to see and do. Leave time to explore.

A number of cultural institutions share Riverfront Museum Park campus park real estate not far from the hotel.  Rockford Art Museum (RAM) houses a collection of works by Illinois artists and in 2018 began a new Pop-Up Restaurant Series. Discovery Center Museum is a family-oriented museum with a science bent, focusing on geological and life science topics relevant to the Rockford region. Burpee Museum of Natural History is home to a juvenile T. rex named Jane. Locals also recommend visiting the nearby Tinker Swiss Cottage that sits on the limestone bluff overlooking Kent Creek.

Across the Rock River, if time permits, visit Anderson Japanese Gardens, one of the top Japanese gardens in North America. Also consider visiting  Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden. Since it will be fall, you may also enjoy a 30-minute drive to an apple orchard, such as Edwards Apple Orchard.

More information about the aforementioned and so much more can be found in the site of the Rockford Visitors and Convention Bureau.

As it becomes available, more information about the Conference program and speakers will be posted in the Conference website. For any questions, please contact Eric Edwards, Publicity Chair for the 2018 HSLI Conference Planning Committee, at EEdwards@ilsos.net.
